Volleyball Tournament Rules

Doubles

“Old School” RulesThat means we play “Side-out” scoring; No Let-serves; Block doesn’t count as a hit; and the original Large court size. (Old School Rules video explanation)

Back in the late 1990’s, these rules were changed for reasons not related to game play. It was controversial then and still is. We felt it hurt the game in a few ways, most importantly, “Rally scoring killed the Come-back!” With Side-out scoring, you are never out of the game…and big come-backs make for some of the most exciting and memorable matches in our sport!

Reverse Co-Ed

In a reverse co-ed doubles volleyball tournament, teams usually consist of two players: one male and one female. The key feature of the “reverse” aspect is that the game has certain rule variations designed to challenge traditional volleyball play. Here are common rules that apply:

1. Team Composition:

  • Each team consists of two players: one male and one female. The roles of the male and female players may vary depending on the specific tournament, but typically, both genders participate equally in all aspects of play.

2. Specialized Contact for Male Players:

  • The male player must make all overhand attacks behind the painted 10-foot line on the court. If the male player must contact the ball in front of the line, it must be a pass or roll shot.
